Getting Connected
Our Community and ComGroups
As a church community, we constantly gather in one another’s homes, developing authentic relationships and discipling one another in the way of Jesus. We call these groupings comgroups. These times together are part of our ongoing journey of living life together as the Body of Christ and reflect our understanding that the church is something that we are, not something that we attend. It’s a who, not a what.
We know that many people are suspicious of (or tired of or done with) the idea of church. Many of us can relate. There is a growing sense among people outside the organized church (and also among many within it) that the church’s investment in centralized growth and impressive programs, presentations, and productions is not so impressive after all.
Our goal is not to critique or mock those who function in those ways, but to affirm and serve those who seek another way. Perhaps that’s because we are those people - not so long ago, we found ourselves hungry (sometimes starving) for another way of understanding and living the message of Jesus. That desire led us to re-engage the Scriptures, pray a lot, and ask God and other people what kind of life we should be living with other Jesus followers.
We still gather each week in a larger group, and that time is an important, meaningful celebration with the greater community of God. We simply find great value in ministering to one another through highly relational, small groups. It seems clear in the teachings, prayers, and lifestyle of Jesus that living in deep connection to others is a big deal. The Apostle Paul repeatedly admonished the early church (and also us, we believe) to be more present for one another, more protective of one another, and more a part of one another. This contradicts and upsets the kind of life most of us have been taught by the world and by religion, and this new way of doing life can be challenging and uncomfortable.
Yet most of us can’t imagine ever going back to another way of living. We find in this soul-level community a new sense of what it means to be alive. That statement will likely strike some as dramatic or exaggerated, and we don’t anticipate that we’ll overcome that perception with everyone. We simply offer the worn out maxim: Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it. Indeed, no amount of reading or writing about community can adequately capture its essence or transforming power.
So whether you are a professing Jesus follower looking for Biblical expression of the local church, a cynic on the verge of giving up on church altogether, or a skeptic interested in how people understand and follow God, consider yourself invited to our fellowship. "Visiting church" doesn’t have to mean sitting on the back pew of a large building and sneaking out early. You’re certainly welcome to check us out on a Sunday evening, but we’d also love to have you join us in one of our homes during the week.
We have multiple comgroups that meet throughout the week. If you are interested in participating in one, please call us at 314-1370 or email mail@comchurch.com.
