CommunityChurch Covenant
Having been led by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and, on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God, angels, and this community, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ.
We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to be a family; to be committed to each other; to love, accept, and forgive each other until death or God’s call causes us to part; to walk together in the love of Christ; to strive for the unity and health of this Church community; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the Church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations.
We also engage to live for Jesus Christ and take His commands seriously; to educate our children in the faith; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment, to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; and to seek God's wisdom in the use of our freedom.
We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; help one another grow toward maturity in the Lord by bearing one another’s burdens, encouraging and exhorting one another, confessing our sins to one another, speaking the truth in love to one another, admonishing one another, submitting to one another, serving one another, patiently bearing with one another, being hospitable to one another, greeting one another, living in peace with one another, regarding one another as more important than ourselves, caring for and serving one another, remembering one another in prayer, aiding one another in sickness and distress, to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and mindful of the teaching of our Savior to secure it without delay.
We moreover invite one another to pray for us, teach us, correct us, or rebuke us, if necessary, in a spirit of gentleness and humility should we stray from our Lord’s commands. We voluntarily submit ourselves to one another and to the discipline of the Church, with the purpose of that discipline being the restoration to fellowship with God and with the covenant community – done in accordance with Matthew 18:15-22.
We finally engage that when we remove from this place, we will, if possible, unite with a church community where we can carry out the articles of this confession and the spirit of this covenant.
We enter into this covenant because we have a common purpose of knowing Jesus Christ through obedience to his commands, because we believe that we need one another’s help to do this, and because we embrace life as “members of one another” in this shared season of life.
As believers and disciples of Jesus Christ we have entered into a covenant relationship with the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, Elijah, Isaiah, Peter, and Paul; with the God who revealed Himself in Jesus. Since the blessing and promise of the covenant have been freely extended and given to us, out of wonder, love, thanksgiving, reverence, and worship, we hereby accept and take up the covenant responsibilities that go with such privilege. This is our reasonable act of worship and we should do nothing less.
God help us all! We rely on Your grace and hold fast to Your promises.
